Music Director Vacancy

Thames Valley Gay Chorus is seeking a new Music Director, as our current MD leaves us this summer due to professional commitments outside the area.

Thames Valley Gay Chorus is a relaxed and friendly place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people (and their friends) to indulge their passion for singing. We're of mixed backgrounds and abilities, and sing a wide, varied and challenging repertoire. We stage two concerts per year with piano accompaniment in local arts centres. We're a sociable bunch too, and plan regular social events, parties, theatre trips etc.

The Chorus currently has approximately 30 voices, usually singing SATB. Members are also encouraged to sing solos, duets and ensemble pieces in our concerts. Although not a requirement of the role, our current MD offers (paid) private lessons with members to improve their personal performance, and we would like this to continue if possible.

The music we perform ranges from classical and sacred music through jazz, blues, songs from the shows to pop. You can find out much more by looking through our recent concert programmes and our library of music, all of which are available on our website www.thamesvalleygaychorus.org.uk.

We enjoy the challenge of learning new pieces and are seeking an inspiring and motivating Musical Director who can:

  • develop the chorus to a high standard of performance, in an engaging and enthusiastic manner.
  • encourage us to expand our musical repertoire.
  • improve our quality of sound.
  • bring their own personal style to the chorus.

It is important that our Music Director:

  • can communicate effectively with people of all ages.
  • has experience in teaching and conducting singers with a wide range of abilities.
  • can enthuse and challenge singers while striving for excellence in performance.
  • has a wide knowledge of repertoire and enthusiasm for its performance.
  • can construct a varied and challenging repertoire.
  • can play piano/keyboard sufficiently well to take rehearsals unaccompanied.

Although not a requirement of the role, our current MD arranges some music for our concerts, which we would like to continue if possible.

Thames Valley Gay Chorus usually rehearses 16:00-18:00 on Sunday afternoons, in two terms per year (nominally late-January to June, and August to early-December). We rehearse within walking distance of Reading railway station, itself just 25 minutes from London Paddington. As well as our two concerts, we perform and recruit at Reading Pride each year (usually the first Saturday in September). We have also committed to be part of the bi-annual LGBT choir festival Hand In Hand, to be held in Manchester in summer 2017 (date to be confirmed).

This is a paid position based on a fee per rehearsal and per concert. The fee is negotiable within a range appropriate to the applicant's experience and reflecting our status as a community choir. The Music Director will have the full support of an active committee.

As part of the selection process shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview with the committee and other members, and to work with the chorus for part of a rehearsal.

The selection process will take place in February/March 2016 with a view to appointment by end of March so that the successful candidate can work with us during the summer on our autumn/winter 2016 repertoire and rehearsal schedule. We reserve the right to appoint this position ahead of the anticipated closing date, without completing the selection process, should a suitable candidate be found. The successful candidate will be subject to a probation period of up to six months, and to include one public performance.

If you have the experience, vision and personality to lead this exciting chorus then please contact Nick Williams (chairman) by email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. including your CV by 28th February 2016.
