About Us

The Thames Valley Gay Chorus (TVGC) is a group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from around the Thames Valley who enjoy singing. We’re based in Reading but perform all around the area. A voluntary group, the Chorus helps develop people with a desire to sing and read music, and enables LGBT people to express themselves through music. Singing has recognised health benefits including respiration, mental health, self-confidence and memory.

The music we perform ranges from classical and sacred music through jazz, blues, songs from the shows to pop. Our repertoire has included Abba, Burt Bacharach, Beach Boys, Beatles, Bee Gees, Beethoven, Irving Berlin, Bon Jovi, Leonard Cohen, Coldplay, Bob Dylan, Fauré, José Feliciano, Handel, Haydn, Billy Joel, Lerner and Loewe, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Offenbach, Cole Porter, Queen, Rodgers and Hammerstein, John Rutter, Strauss, James Taylor, Verdi, stage musicals and movies. Take a look at our recent concert programmes - there’s sure to be something for everyone!

We stage two concerts per year – usually in the summer and then in winter. We have also been asked to appear at other events, including:

  • Reading Pride
  • Thames Valley Police’s Diversity Party
  • The birthday party for a Reading MP
  • A conference organised by the Berkshire Older Lesbian and Gay Forum
  • The Oxford University LGBT Christmas Ball.

rehearsal3Our concerts include the whole chorus, small groups, duets and solos so you can decide how much of the spotlight you’d like! Of course, no one is forced to perform in public if they prefer not to.

A committee elected from the membership runs the chorus. They meet regularly to plan and organise the programme of performances, and to oversee chorus business such as publicity, membership, and finance.

logoThe Reading Gay Men’s Chorus was founded in 2003 by Wyndham Clampett as its director and Anthony Witt as its musical director, with regular rehearsals at South Street Arts Centre, Reading. Having quickly expanded to include women it soon was renamed the Reading Gay Chorus and gave its debut concert in 2004. Matt Jelf joined as Music Director for the 2010 winter season and in 2011 the name changed once again to become the Thames Valley Gay Chorus, a reflection of the increasingly diverse geographic base of the membership. In October 2012, the Chorus changed rehearsal venue to New Bridge School, Reading. Samuel Barton replaced Matt as Music Director for the 2016 winter season.
